***Please note – I am not accepting any further bookings for birth support for 2016 or 2017. If you are looking for a doula, please feel free to contact me, and I can provide you with contact details of other doulas servicing the area. I am still running childbirth education workshops, so visit the Hypnobirthing page for upcoming dates.***

A doula (birth attendant/birth support person) is a woman who supports women (and their birth partners) throughout their pregnancy and birth.  A doula will usually meet with the birthing woman several times in the lead-up to her birth, provide ongoing support (in person) at the birth, and also assist the woman in her post-birth period.

Why have a doula?

In a review of twenty-two trials involving 15,288 women, Hodnett et al concluded the following:

“Women who received continuous labour support were more likely to give birth ‘spontaneously’, i.e. give birth with neither caesarean nor vacuum nor forceps. In addition, women were less likely to use pain medications, were more likely to be satisfied, and had slightly shorter labours. Their babies were less likely to have low five-minute Apgar scores. No adverse effects were identified. We conclude that all women should have continuous support during labour.”
